What is 40 Days + 40 Nights (An Arts and Culture Explosion)?
A calendar listing (and web presence www.4040fest.com) of arts and cultural events/activities/happenings taking place October 1 - November 9 in communities throughout southwest Virginia. Culminating weekend activities include the one-year anniversary celebration of the opening of the Taubman Museum of Art. Free take-away booklets will be printed (approximately 5-10,000) and distributed throughout southwest Virginia communities.
What is the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul!?
This festival serves as the kick-off event for 40 Days + 40 Nights and features special events/activities taking place in the City of Roanoke.
What's the difference between the two?
Think of 40 Days + 40 Nights (An Arts and Culture Explosion) as a big umbrella. Picture on the left hand side of the umbrella, the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul! and the right hand side of the umbrella, special events/activities celebrating the anniversary of the Taubman Museum of Art. The center part of the umbrella contains all of the great arts and cultural events/activities/happenings taking place throughout southwest Virginia; from Floyd, Salem, Covington, Smith Mountain Lake, Blacksburg and Bedford.
Will City Soul! always be the theme for the Roanoke Arts Festival?
No. The theme will change each year.
Why does my event/activity have to take place within the City of Roanoke limits in order to be considered for the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul!?
The Roanoke Arts Festival was, up until very recently, presented by the City of Roanoke. With current economic challenges, the City was no longer able to present this program. The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will now coordinate the Roanoke Arts Festival and felt it was important to honor the City for their current and past leadership for envisioning a City arts festival.
My event/activity wasn't selected for the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul! What happens now?
You may list your event/activity as part of 40 Days + 40 Nights.
Why do I have to offer a 10% discount to audiences?
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge wants to ensure that the community has access to all the wonderful arts and cultural opportunities taking place during this time frame. By offering a small discount to your event/activity, you are making the arts and culture accessible and available to more audiences. We also hope that by offering a discount, your organization may reach new audiences and become new/continued supporters. In addition, the 4040 Fun Pass will be a wonderful offering to visitors participating in the 4040 Fall Get-Away packages.
If my event/activity is selected for the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul!, why do I have to have FREE events or ticket/admissions prices $10 or less?
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge facilitated wrap-up sessions for the Roanoke Arts Festival and the arts/cultural community felt that an affordable one-price ticket pass was needed. In order to keep the one-price ticket pass affordable, and because The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge has very limited resources/finances, we are asking organizations to find ways to offer FREE events/activities (which many are already doing) or an inexpensive ticket price (under $10). That way we can have 5-6 events/activities (even more if we have FREE events) and provide the community with a one ticketed pass for $55(adults) and $45(children).
How will my organization benefit from participating in 40 Days + 40 Nights and/or the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul!?
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will market and promote your events/activities through a FREE take-away booklet/calendar, web presence and print/radio advertising. The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is also partnering with area hotels to offer special 4040 Fall Get-Away packages to increase the number of visitors coming to our region and to your event/activity. In addition, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will enter all of your events/activities into the printed booklet and in the web calendars. Note: We will input your events/activities into the web calendars after 40 Days + 40 Nights is underway and all the way up to November 9.
What is the 4040 Fun Pass?
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will create a card/lanyard that audiences can present at 40 Days + 40 Nights events/activities, while receiving a 10% discount (or two-for-one tickets, free popcorn, etc.)
Will The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge sell tickets to our events/activities?
Yes and No. The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will promote/sell the 4040 Fun Pass for $10 to the general public. We will also sell up to 75 Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul! ticket passes. (Adults - $55 and Children - $45). The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is unable, at this time, to sell individual tickets to events/activities taking place during 40 Days + 40 Nights or the Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul!
Say what?
In a nutshell, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will sell the 4040 Fun Pass and Roanoke Arts Festival: City Soul! ticket packages only.
Is there funding available for participating artists and organizations?
No. Not at this time. The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge coordinates this marketing/promotional opportunity, but is not a presenting organization. In addition, we do not have a venue/space that we make available to artists/organizations. However, we do include a venue/gallery guide on our web site (check for this information starting June 1, 2009); to help you in your efforts to seek/secure a space for your event/activity.
I/We are not members of The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge. Why do we have to pay a fee?
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is offering this at no cost to our members as they pay an annual membership fee. This funding allows us to provide programs and services (like 40 Days + 40 Nights and more throughout the year) to the community, while supporting our members. We'd love to do everything at no cost to the arts/cultural community, but we need to be realistic in what we can do with very limited staff/resources.
What is the deadline for submitting my events/activities?
Monday, July 20 by 5:00 PM
What is the deadline for reserving advertising space?
Monday, July 13 by 5:00 PM
I/We missed the print deadline! What do we do now?
Because the calendar will list events/activities on each day/night October 1 - November 9, we can't have on-going multiple events/activities listed (confusing to the community). By listing a specific event/activity on a specific day, the community can quickly and easily make their decision as to what they want to do that day. Note: We will also have a separate page listing on-going (gallery exhibitions, long performance runs, etc.) to accommodate everyone.
I/We missed the print deadline! What do we do now?
You can still enter your events/activities into the web site calendars: MyScoper and www.4040fest.com
