My current body of work combines media and techniques that I have explored over many years and transfers them to the fiber art field. Color is a very important part of my work and it ranges from subtle variations to brilliant colors flowing across the fabric.
In order to capture the colors I see and their many variations, I use textile paints, printing inks, and pastels to create images, color and texture on white cotton fabric or canvas. I design and carve my printing plates, which either serve as the central image in a small piece or as added imagery in larger pieces.
I create the quilt top as either a single piece of painted fabric (whole cloth) or machine-pieced fabrics, only using fabrics that I have created. The finished piece consists of three layers, the top image bearing fabric, batting and a hand-painted backing fabric, which are stitched together by machine or by hand using embroidery floss or thread. The stitches add another dimension to the image through their texture and the dashes of color they provide. They are reminiscent of the strokes of color created when using pastels or colored pencils on paper.
