Artist Statement

In current work, I am creating paintings that exist as both landscape and non-objective images.  I have been influenced by the mountains all my life.  They are the backdrop to my daily experience and I have a personal connection to them as a symbol of home, safety, and spirituality.  My paintings are not only about mountains, however.  I am interested in creating images that both dissolve into and emerge from my paintings.  They can also be seen as non-objective works that illustrate an internal landscape.  I see a connection between the land and the physical body, as well as the sky and the spirit.  These works are not a literal depiction of an external place, but are purged from my memories, imagination, and subconscious.  I am exploring ways in which the shapes and colors of my landscapes can suggest both the human body and the spirit.
