John Anfin
I know the exact moment I became an artist. My second grade teacher, Mavis Lester, of McHarg Elementary School in Radford, VA, gave everyone in my class the "draw the state bird and flower" assignment.

Later, when she came to my desk, she put her hand on my shoulder and said, "John, you're an artist"; and I believed her.

Brian Counihan
Brian Counihan is an Irish artist with 20 years of exhibition experience both as an artist and curator in places as diverse as Ireland, Italy, Chicago and Virginia. A founding faculty member of Community High, Counihan has developed educational programs in conjunction with cultural and arts organizations including the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, and is the director of the fledgling Marginal Arts Festival, Roanoke's carnival of diverse and valid culture.

His paintings and drawings can be very pompously described as "rhythmic improvisational compositions and poetic conflations of cultural iconography, literary epochs and anthropological ephemera that form a visually cacophonic collision of mixed metaphors," or more simply as --abstract works with hints of stories.

Martha Dillard
Whether it be the New River or the branch of Sinking Creek that flows below our home, fog on the mountain, the glory of spring from the top of the meadow, a sunset over the tops of distant trees, an old house, or a favorite view down a road, I am enchanted by it. The last ten years of living in the middle of Sinking Creek Valley in Craig County have given me the opportunity to be wrapped in this mountain beauty and to remember it with paints and canvas.

Educated at Austin College (B.A.) and Virginia Tech (B.A.), Dillard has studied at workshops with Wayne Thiebauld, Darby Bannard, and Susan Shatter and at Arrowmont and Penland Schools of Art and Craft. Her work is in public and private collections throughout the US and in Britain and Germany. Dillard's studio is on the farm where she lives with her husband in the Sinking Creek Valley of Craig County, Virginia.

Colors speak to me. Sometimes they shout out, “Use me, use me.” When I am ready to paint, I consult my colors and then I let the colors fly. I like to use the same approach when I work in clay. When I am ready to glaze my work, I consult with the colors to see which ones are shouting to go on my work. Colors are joyous and I like them to transmit the joy in my work.

Julie Felton
I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I work full time as an Art Director for an advertising agency, but I have a passion for fine arts. In my free time I work with various mediums including pastels, oil and acrylic paint, colored pencil, charcoal, pen & ink, and graphic software to create paintings and drawings. I love studying the paintings of the Baroque masters but my subject matter ranges from still life to children’s portraits. However, my favorite subject is undoubtedly animals – especially endangered species. I absolutely love working on artwork of animals and as an active volunteer at Mill Mountain Zoo, I try to take as many photos of the zoo animals for reference as possible. I hope to become increasingly active in both the conservation of these magnificent creatures as well as capturing their beauty in my artwork.

My art is my "musical"¯ composition and I've been "composing" most of my life. I was guided early by my grandmother, using many kinds of materials, textures and colors to "compose"¯ a scenic diorama. I have stitched in several media since I was 10 years old. Using thread, fibers and beads, my hands express what I hear in music or see outside my studio window, thus my composition.

Hankla's paintings are experiments in rhythm and color. Simple geometry often structures the work, even when it's not readily apparent. Professor of English and creative writing at Hollins University, she has taught filmmaking and cross-media image/word studios as well as creative writing and literature. Often exhibited at regional and national juried shows, her paintings hang in corporate and individual collections.

A canvas, sculpture, or the time line of new media presents a stage for me to examine the visually driven attributes of light, perspective, color, form, and movement. Past experiences, present environment, imagination, and experimentation with mixed media allow me to echo my passions, peace, or pleasure. Creations from impressions encountered in urban, rural, or figurative life evolve abstractly. Innovative form and color are fashioned from the physical, mental, or spiritual.

Suzun Hughes
Suzun Hughes moved from San Francisco to Roanoke Virginia in April of 2007. She and her husband, sculptor John Wilson, renovated a commercial building in the Historic downtown Roanoke ARTS District into their residence, their art studios, and a studio art gallery.

Suzun's paintings and photographs are inspired by textures and abstract forms which she uses to create unexpected unions of shape, color, and line. Her bold, colorful, and expressive images endeavor to show something of the unconscious and preverbal mind while exploring the properties of paint and digital art technology.

Christopher D. Jones
My initial background as an artist was in the commercial art realm. As an undergraduate at Roanoke College, I had focused more on photography and silkscreen prints. Following graduation I worked for a newspaper publication for a few years before turning to oils and watercolor. I have been honing my craft all my life, and exhibiting since 2007.

My current body of work is centered on memory, experience, space and place. The abstracted images are images and scenes from my youth growing up in Southwest Virginia. They are not meant to be literal depictions of place. They are plasticized, altered and arranged to heighten the emotion that I feel for these locations and events.

I am perpetually intrigued with the posiibilities of marrying realism and abstraction, both in theory and application.
While I find beauty in truth, fiction manifests greater expression, especially in the manipulation of human figures, granting permission to break away from real life constraints.

I work primarily in pastel, a pure permanent pigment with a wonderful range of vibrant, unadulterated colors. Growing up along the beaches of Long Island, New York, and now living on a lake in Virginia, I paint landscapes that are reminiscent of my youth, as well as the beautiful lakes and farms of Southwest Virginia. I hope my artwork invokes feelings of peace and joy.

I have a great love for photography. I love taking pictures of wonderful places, people and things and have been into photography for over forty years, but just recently discovered my true passion for photography in the form of HDR (High Dynamic Range). For years I tried to put what I was seeing with my naked eye (light, shadow, color and contrast) on paper. With the discovery of HDR, I have done that. A good photograph must have something to say. A good photograph should make you feel good and possibly invoke some good memories.

My family and my art define who I am, and my paintings are often a reflection of the world which comforts me: the horses whom I've ridden or admired, the animals who have shared a snuggle, the landscapes where I call home, the still life images which involve personal treasures, and the dances of sunlight which embellish an afternoon on our beef cattle farm.

I create series of artworks that focus on the beauty in Nature’s physical systems. Inspired by patterns, color, oxidation, life and decay in physical, geological, astronomical and biological fields of scientific study and observation. My recent projects involve sculptures depicting psychological and social behavior theorems interpreted through form and color, the hidden particles and waves underlying the spectrum of light utilized by human vision and color shown I the feathers of bird species, also responding to man’s relationship with these creatures.

Blake Prim
My name is Blake Prim. I have lived in Roanoke for two years. Recently moved from Carthage, North Carolina, I have come from a family of educators who are passionate about the arts. We live in a world that not only creates art but is made from art and my body of work revolves around giving back what has been given to me. I am captured by the simple beauty of nature and its miraculous ability to go unnoticed. Many never recognize its true value or care to gain insight into this remarkable world that has been given to us. We have the responsibility to be caretakers of the world around us. If we don't understand our world how can we possibly begin to take care of it? My art is my response to this equation. It's my way of examining our beautiful surrounding that we take for granted.

My work pertains to the idea of consciousness. I am interested in becoming aware of our actions and asking ourselves why we do the things we do. My work is often of a private nature, looking inward to my thoughts and emotions and giving revealing interpretations of myself and my choices, and through my work I may cause others to think inwardly.
My inspiration is derived from the meditation and calmness of creations like sand mandalas and henna tattoos; adornment, patience, meditation, these ephemeral qualities that are more a journey of the mind than of art.

As a self taught artist living at Smith Mountain Lake there is an abundance of inspiring scenery to paint. I like to paint landscapes, flowers and still life and especially skies. The sunsets at the lake are my favorite. The mediums I use are watercolors, acrylic and pastels. For me, painting is a relaxing get away.

Anna Wentworth
My interest in art started early. I was sick a lot as a child and to entertain me, my mother used to draw stories for me about her own childhood; that is probably where my interest in art began. I started drawing at an early age, often on walls and my mother's books (which is why my parents began supplying me with lots of paper). Originally, I wanted to be an illustrator-to tell stories through my art; and I think storytelling through art is still what I am after, even if the stories themselves are only in my own mind. I am fascinated by people and the lives I imagine for them, by abandoned dwellings and barns, and any landscapes that seem to have a story behind them. I work in acrylic, oil and watercolor and have several exhibits planned for 2009. I have studied with Peyton Klein, Vera Dickinson and Ann Glover.

The average person, viewing art, responds to either color, subject matter or an emotional attachment. In some ways I attempt to meet one or more of these responses by the choices that I make, concerning my art.

Janet Wimmer
After retiring from teaching school for 30 years, I am now painting and teaching at home in my studio. The beauty of the surrounding valley inspires me. Color is my passion and many of my paintings are done on red backgrounds. My paintings are becoming a spiritual portrait of who I am as my journey through life continues.

Margaret Sue Turner Wright
It has been my experience, that Art opens the door to creativity, compassion, and Spiritual perspective, as it concerns a wholeness and connectedness to all humanity. To create depth of form thru line, color and values, is a reawakening of a certain perspective that allows us to both "see", and be the object that is "seen".
